Conference Keynote on Ordinary Intimacies
Organizer name
In this talk, Dr Jenny van Hooff asks why attending to the ordinary matters for understanding intimate life. She argues that mundane intimacies reveal how assumptions about normality and heteronormativity are enacted, reproduced, and sometimes resisted.
Drawing on a range of empirical examples, including midlife couples and infidelity, her talk shows how relationships are maintained, strained, and negotiated through routine practices. These examples illuminate the emotional work involved in sustaining connections and the cumulative effects of subtle power dynamics that are easily overlooked when attention is directed only to rupture or crisis.
By making the ordinary visible, sociology can rethink intimacy and illuminate the social forces shaping everyday relationships.
Come along to Dr Jenny van Hooff’s keynote address at the Ordinary Intimacies symposium, hosted by the Contemporary Intimacies, Sexualities and Genders (CISG) Research Group.
